Typical Duties of a Truck Driver

If you are thinking about going to a truck driving school and becoming a professional truck driver, you may be wondering one thing. What are the duties of a truck driver?

The duties of a truck driver are going to vary depending on different factors. For example, is the job for a local driving position or an over the road driving position (otr) or long haul truck driver? Also, what type of freight is the driver hauling? Is the driver hauling fuel, groceries, steel, automobiles, hazardous materials, etc…? As you can see, the type of freight being hauled could make a difference in the potential duties of the truck driver.

If you are a local truck driver you may be responsible for sales, collecting money, customer services, etc...

If you are an over the road or long haul driver you may be required to sleep in the cab of the truck, or possibly in a motel.

For all drivers, here is a list of some duties that may or may not be required as each trucking company and job description will be different. This list is not all-inclusive there may be other required duties for the trucking job.

  • Driving the truck.
  • Perform loading and unloading of freight. This may or may not include forklift operations. Not all drivers are responsible for loading and unloading, many companies may allow the use of lumpers to load and unload the trailer.
  • Coupling the tractor and trailer.
  • Completing paperwork such as logs, fuel records, receipts, etc…
  • Refueling the tractor and the trailer if it is refrigerated such as when carrying groceries and frozen goods.
  • Inspection of the equipment - i.e., tractor, trailer, tires, etc. before commencing driving duties and performing minor repairs when required.
  • Keeping the tractor and trailer clean (usually by taking it through a truck wash).
